GOALS Adventure Race – The SAVAGE

April 20th was the beginning of hopefully a new event here at the park. GOALS events combine outdoor athletics with various physical and mental challenges. The 20 mile race consisted of ten miles by mountain bike, five miles up and down the Brandywine River by canoe, and five miles by foot led mainly by an orienteering map. The goal of the race was to reach the many checkpoints through the course and get back in the fastest time. Several of the checkpoints tested the participants with mental challenges such as trivia questions and outdoor survival skills. These skills had to be completed before they were allowed to continue. 105 teams competed in this event with the fastest teams finishing in less than 4 ½ hours. The GOALS group brought many of the own volunteers to help run this event. Two of our own Friends members were on hand to help out where ever needed.

A side benefit to these events comes from donations/pledges raised by the participants for a local charity. For this race, that charity was our own Friends of Brandywine Creek State Park. A very sizable amount was raised and we are very appreciative to all who gathered the donations and to those that gave.

Anyone interested in competing in any upcoming GOALS events, check out the link here on our blog.
